Значение существительного attempt изменяется в зависимости от следующего за ним предлога. Attempt в значении 'попытка, проба, опыт' употребляется с предлогом at: attempt at achieving one's purpose (дополнение выражено герундием). Attempt в значении 'покушение' требует дополнения с предлогом on: attempt on one's life (дополнение выражено существительным).
